Digital Storage Oscilloscopes
Digital Storage Oscilloscopes are available in traditional benchtop models which now have become small and light enough to be essentially portable. Hnadheld models which usually include a batery for power and can be ideal for firled applications and also in USB styles which utilyze a computer for screen and control functions and when combined with a battery powered laptop computer can also be very portable. The three main characteristics that should be considered include bandwidth, sampling rate (real time) and memory depth. A digital storage oscilloscope, which also be called a scope, CRO, DSO, or o-scope, is an electronic testing device that allows the user to observe the changing signal voltages. The image that is used to gather the data is shown on a two-dimensional graph, using a Y and X axis. These instruments are mostly used to observe the exact wave shape of an electrical signal. Oscilloscopes will show the amplitude of the signal, the distortion between two events and the relative timing of two signals.
The DSO's as they are often called, are primarily used in the science, medicine, engineering, and telecommunications fields. The tools are used to keep basic maintenance up on electronic and laboratory instruments. Other digital storage oscilloscopes may be used in automobiles to test the ignition system and there is even a DSO that measures a heartbeat in the form of a waveform.
The basic oscilloscope is broken into four primary sections, the display, vertical controls, horizontal controls, and the trigger controls. A majority of the time the display screen will be a CRT or LCD screen and fitted with horizontal and vertical reference lines known as the graticule. The vertical section of the instrument controls the amplitude of the displayed signal. The horizontal section of the device is for time based sweeps of the instrument. Finally the trigger is used to start the event of the sweep.
