High Speed Link (HSL) is a new , standards-based technology for distributed real-time I/O. The technology allows a user to install a control network using only inexpensive CAT 5 cable and plain copper wire, then use that network to manage thousands of I/O points from an off-the-shelf industrial PC.
  • Up to 32,000 Distributed I/Os
  • 1,000 points/msec scan rate
  • Easy Expansion/Upgradable
  • Reduced Wiring
  • Reduced Maintenance Costs
  • Open Industrial PC Platform
  • Internal Self-Diagnostics
  • Supports Standard Application Software
High Speed Link (HSL) is a new , standards-based technology for distributed real-time I/O. The technology allows a user to install a control network using only inexpensive CAT 5 cable and plain copper wire, then use that network to manage thousands of I/O points from an off-the-shelf industrial PC. HSL is a fast multidrop serial technology excellently suited for I/O control. It provides an easy and inexpensive way to connect PC-based controllers to their I/O points. The system is composed of slave units daisychained to one or more PCI bus master cards in the PC. Slave units consist of one or two I/O modules housed in a terminal base which provides the I/O terminals. Using a high speed multidrop serial protocol based closely on RS-422, an HSL network is error-correcting and self-diagnosing. With 1,000 points/msec scan rates, 6Mbps transmissions, and very low messaging overhead, HSL is faster, less expensive, and more flexible than existing solutions.

ADLINK’s HSL I/O systems are designed around PCI-bus master cards communicating with daisychained remote slave units over single CAT 5 cables. The architecture allows for installing the slaves near the I/O points being monitored, minimizing wiring runs and reducing potential noise and signal losses. Network interface cards (NICs) are not required. Using ADLINK’s HSL, a single PC could be configured to support more than 32,000 digital input or output points. Though maximized, all the points in the network could be scanned in less than 2 msec without putting a burden on the host PC. That’s as real-time as real time can get. HSL supports programmers with standard Windows 98/2000/NT, Embedded NT and Linux drivers and DLLs. An expanding choice of software tools to include IEC 61131-3, DAQ Bench, ISaGRAF and others allow engineers to rapidly and effeciently port their applications to a PC-based controller with HSL. ADLINK’s HSL makes I/O control real fast, real-time, real simple!
